Vilma Rimšaitė
In 1989 when she was only 6 years old, Vilma’s father, a former road cyclist, started the first BMX track in Lithuania. Naturally, Vilma and her brother were the first riders in the country. As he became more serious in the sport and coaching, Vilma’s athletic performance showed promising results. As a result of the end of the Russian repression at that time, support of various sport disciplines from the new government rapidly grew and new federations were formed. With her city's support, Vilma was afforded the opportunity to participate in international European events where her career in BMX took off. Her achievements before she became pro rider, included multiple European Championship podiums, as well as a World Champion Title at the age of 14.
Vilma became a pro BMX rider at the age of 17, as she continued to make podiums at European and World races. In 2008 BMX racing was introduced into the Olympic Games. This is when BMX racing gained recognition as worldwide and widely respected professional and amateur competitive sport. It became very detail oriented, professional, competitive, challenging and a full time job to the most successful athletes. At the time, this was the ultimate goal for every professional rider and the country behind him/her.
To reach this goal she had to not only work really hard, but was then given the privilege to work with some of the world's best BMX coaches, physical therapist, nutritionists, sports scientists and specialist. Throughout her 17 years as a professional BMX racer she gathered extensive of knowledge about the sport and it's specifics, which today she enjoy translating to the kids she coaches and trains.
A little about how she ended up in the USA:
In 2015 she participated in USA BMX biggest event of the years, The Grands. At grands she was noticed by an American BMX Team, called Rift Tangent. As they were growing and looking to break into European market, they saw the value in having some well known and respected European riders on their team, resulting in them having more recognition, and more European riders on the team. Today they are one of the top high end BMX race parts makers. Fast forward and she is now wife to the owner.
Moving here and adapting to new culture hasn't been easy for Vilma, BMX coaching and the team is something she truly loves and made the transition a little easier. It's one place she feels she is respected, needed, appreciated and greatly valued.
